Geriatric Care Counselling

What are Geriatric Mental Health Issues?

Even though mental health issues are not a normal part of ageing, the elderly are at an increased risk of developing mental health conditions. The risk of mental health conditions in the elderly arises predominantly due to changes in their lives, and some people may find it very challenging to adjust to these changes. As per studies by the WHO, at least one in four older adults experiences some mental disorder, such as depression, anxiety, or dementia.

Recognizing and taking care of mental health issues in older adults is crucial. These issues don't just bring emotional distress; they can also make it tougher to handle other health problems.

Your Questions on Geriatric Therapy Answered

No, there is no specific duration for this therapy because every individual has different needs and goals, and that is why some have longer sessions while others have short-term sessions.

While working with older adults, some things have to be considered by the therapists. They are age-related changes, prior medical conditions, any medications prescribed, their cultural background and so on. It helps the therapists understand the type of care required for the individual.

It depends entirely on the person who is coming for the therapy session. If they feel that having a family member can help them open up to the therapist, then they can bring one. But there are times when they won’t be able to talk in the presence of others. So it is always suggested that they inform the therapist on this matter.

Sometimes the presence of family members can hinder the therapy sessions because they may resist the older adults from speaking about certain things. This situation can create a power dynamic and prevent the person from speaking up on certain matters.

The basic questions usually involve the lifestyle of the individual, medications, health issues, support from society and family, and their daily diet.
